This synthetic denatured ethanol product is produced by mixing two types of alcohol, water and powdered bitrex to make a solution. Pure ethanol of 99% concentration is mixed with water at a ratio of 9:1. This is added to Butyl Alcohol and 10ppm bitrex. Purity of ethanol is measured by concentration of the substance of ethanol in liquid solution. Volume of ethanol over volume of the final solution (v/v) is the most accurate measurement of purity.

At a concentration of 90% there are 900 ethanol particles for every 100 other particles, in a 1000 particle solution. This 90% denatured ethanol has bitrex added to it. Bitrex contains the most bitter tasting compound known as denatonium benzoate. It is added to denatured alcohol to prevent oral consumption. Denatured alcohol is toxic when ingested, so it is not intended for manufacturing beverages.
