Pure ethanol of 99.9% concentration and pure acetaldehyde of 99.5% concentration are mixed to produce natural denatured ethanol. Purity of ethanol is measured by concentration of the substance of ethanol in liquid solution. Volume of ethanol over volume of the final solution (v/v) is the most accurate measurement of purity.

At a concentration of 99.8% there are 998 ethanol particles for every 2 other particles, in a 1000 particle solution. This 99.8% pure ethanol is denatured by the addition of acetaldehyde, which occurs naturally in plants, making it a favourable option for hygienic products. It is used in the production of dyes, resins, oils, and synthetic acids. It is not intended for the manufacture of beverages.
