Synthetic denatured ethanol product is produced by mixing two types of alcohol, powdered bitrex, and distilled water to make a solution. This product contains pure ethanol of 99.9% concentration, Butyl Alcohol of 0.01% concentration, 10ppm bitrex and pure distilled water. Purity of ethanol is measured by concentration of the substance of ethanol in liquid solution. Volume of ethanol over volume of the final solution (v/v) is the most accurate measurement of purity.

At a concentration of 70.0% there are 700 ethanol particles for every 300 other particles, in a 1000 particle solution. This 70.0% pure denatured ethanol has bitrex added to it. Bitrex contains the most bitter tasting compound known as denatonium benzoate. It is added to denatured alcohol to prevent oral consumption. Denatured alcohol is toxic when ingested, so it is not intended for manufacturing beverages.
