Purity of ethanol is measured by concentration of the substance of ethanol in liquid solution. Volume of ethanol over volume of the final solution (v/v) is the most accurate measurement of purity.

At a concentration of 96.9% there are 969 ethanol particles for every 31 other particles, in a 1000 particle solution. This 96.9% pure ethanol is denatured by the addition of isopropyl alcohol, making it safe to use in healthcare and food processing industries. It is used to in the production of methylated spirits and antiseptics. It is not intended for the manufacture of beverages.
